Manufacturer ID

Search by ID Tags

Search by identifying tags, serial numbers and/or manufacturer names often located on the back or lower front corner of each unit. These tags may provide clues to the type of box which is installed.

DOOR ID

Search by Door Size

One way to determine your mailbox type is by the size of the compartment doors. The following images show the most common door layouts:

Vertical Doors
Vertical mailboxes have taller doors and are typically used in older apartment buildings with smaller mail areas and minimal wall space. There are usually no more than 7 doors per mailbox cabinet.
Horizontal Doors
These doors are more square or slightly rectangular, and are used in commercial or residential buildings. These doors can be in several row and column configurations.
CBU Doors
These doors are much wider, and are typically used in newer cluster box units. These units are usually installed in single family residential neighborhoods.
STD-4C Doors
Like the CBU, 4C doors are also much wider, and are typically used in newer 4C mailbox units. These units are usually installed in newer multi-tenant buildings.

MOUNTING ID

Search by Installation Type

You can also identify your mailbox by the way it's installed. The following installation examples should help you identify your current mailbox.

Wall Installation
STD-4C, horizontal and vertical mailboxes are installed into an wall, or mounted directly on it. Some installations open from the back inside a mail room. These mailboxes can be used for USPS or private mail delivery.
Pedestal Installation
CBUs are installed free-standing on a pedestal. Older mailboxes (such as NDCBUs) have been replaced by CBUs (cluster box units). Pedestal mounted Cluster Box Units are designed to be installed outdoors.
